Job Summary
Prepares, designs and fabricates object mounts for the Hawaiian Hall Renovation Project in accordance to Museum industry standards. Provides training and instruction on mount fabrication to exhibit preparators. Works well with Bishop Museum Curators, Designers and Conservator to ensure any deadlines within schedules are kept.
Major Duties or Responsibilities
Designs and fabricates mounts for artifacts that reflect sound conservation practices, sensitivity to design aesthetics, and competence in varied mount-making techniques. Reviews object mount requirements with curators, designers and conservator to ensure they meet museum industry standards. Assists with managing mount making schedule to meet project deadlines, including development of pragmatic strategies and solicitation of professional advise and guidance as required. Prepares scale models for both design and presentation purposes. Works with exhibit designers and museum staff and clients in a professional manner at all times to ensure good relations. Able to communicate effectively. Works in a safe manner. Complies with all safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices. Reads all safety material received. Reports unsafe conditions and unsafe acts, and accidents directly to supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with custom metal fabrication for gallery or museum environment. Experience in various media and ability to fabricate mounts in acrylic, metal, and wood. Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines. Experience working with machinery, relating to abrasives, milling, cutting, welding. Minimum of 5 years Museum exhibition display experience and working with artifacts in a museum environment.
Education
BA, BFA, Vocational or Trade School or educational equivalent in a related field desired. Must have a minimum of 5 years experience in mount making with demonstrated knowledge of mount making techniques, materials and procedures. Portfolio required.
Skills
Demonstrate knowledge of varied materials and associated techniques for mount making (acrylic, metal [brass, stainless steel, etc], wood). Ability to operate hand tools and table saw, band saw, miter saw, sanders, grinders, planer, router and other power tools as required. Good problem solving skills with strong attention to detail Ability to determine and appropriate materials needed to accomplish job Well Organized Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to work under time constraints to complete tasks by required dates Ability to work effectively in a team context
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequently sedentary to light duties, with occasionally medium and heavy work involved. Must be able to sit, climb, and or balance, stand, and walk to perform construction and maintenance functions. Use of hand tools requires handling and fingering ability, as well as hand-eye coordination. Must possess physical strength sufficient to push, pull, and lift materials weighing over 1001bs. And carry up to 100 lbs (may use pallet jack, carts, dollies, etc.). Must be able to communicate verbally with co-workers, and clients, vendors, both in person and over the phone. Use of computer, reading emails, using word, excel and other software. Visual requirements include good-to-excellent vision, depth perception, and wide field of vision. May be exposed to noise, fumes, dust, heat/cold, and construction materials.
