JOB DESCRIPTION – Essential Job Responsibilities:
Full-time position; Monday – Friday, but with weekend and evening hours also part of the position. Present science outreach programs at schools and community events both on O‘ahu and on neighbor islands. Present science education programs to both school groups and general public at Bishop Museum. Work with science education team in seeking science education grants. Work with science education team in developing new programs and refining existing programs. Work with science education team in managing Science Education docent program.
MAJOR DUTIES OR RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Presenting “outreach” programs on a wide range of science topics from geology to astronomy. Venues include large assembly programs, classroom lessons, astronomy shows in portable “Starlab Planetarium,” and other venues such as Family Science Night. Programs are presented on O‘ahu and on neighbor islands. Audiences include school children grades Kindergarten through 12th grade and general public.
*Providing onsite science education programs for both school and public visitors to Bishop Museum. Topics range from geology to astronomy.
Assisting Science Education Manager and other staff is seeking out, writing, submitting and delivering on grants (local, state, foundation and federal grants).
*Assist with technical aspects of program development for Science on a Sphere (a six-foot globe run by computer and lit by video projectors) and other high-tech educational tools.
*Assisting the rest of the science team in developing and presenting teacher workshops on a variety of science topics.
*Developing science programs for school visitors and general public and in refining existing programs.
*Work with Science Education Team and others in recruitment, training, support and program evaluation of Science Education docent group.
*Work with science education team and others in evaluation of science education programs.
*Promoting Bishop Museum programs through attendance at teacher events, open houses, and media appearances.
*Participating in other program working groups as needed; this includes working on education plan for temporary science exhibits brought in to the Museum and participating in teams that develop Museum-generated science exhibits.
*Interacting with staff, museum clients, contractors, and others with tact, courtesy, and unqualified respect at all times. Stay motivated and project a positive and professional attitude toward fellow workers and clients.
* Working in a safe manner so as not to endanger fellow staff members, volunteers and visitors. Comply with safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices. Reading all safety materials received. Reporting unsafe conditions and unsafe acts directly to supervisor. Promptly reporting accidents to immediate supervisor. Maintaining assigned work area and equipment freed of accident producing conditions.
Performing other duties as required to accomplish Museum goals.

QUALIFICATIONS
*Classroom teaching experience, especially recent experience in the classroom, is valuable
*Program delivery experience in formal (classroom) or informal (museum/aquarium/zoo/etc) settings.
*Experience in public speaking/performance.
*Strong technical skills (computer programming etc.) preferred
*Science background is a strong plus.
*Experience in doing program evaluation a plus.
*Must be flexible, patient, able to work weekends and evenings as needed. Must enjoy working with school children and with general public. Strong team member skills necessary. Must be able to handle multiple projects and maintain composure under pressure. Experience with both PC and Mac platforms desirable.
EDUCATION
BA or BS required
Degree in Education, in a science field, or other relevant area preferred
SKILLS

*Experience in formal education (i.e. classroom teaching) highly desired.

*Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed.
