Science Education Manager (FT)

JOB DESCRIPTION – Essential Job Responsibilities:

Manage team of science educators.  Seek out, write, and report on federal, state and local grants.  Supervise the development of science education programming.  Work with researchers at Bishop Museum in creating and presenting programs that “tell the story” of Bishop Museum’s work in natural sciences, archaeology, Hawaiian culture and other areas.  Serve as a core Bishop Museum member in the Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations (ECHO) project, a national educational partnership, Deliver a range of educational programs offsite and onsite. Set goals for science education team.

MAJOR DUTIES OR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. §         Take a leadership role in Science Education at Bishop Museum
  2. §         Manage team of 4-5 Science Educators directly; set goals, perform annual evaluations, provide guidance and direction for all staff in the Science Education Team.
  3. §         Take leading role in seeking out, writing, submitting federal, local and state grants.
  4. §         Take lead role in managing delivery of grant-related projects in the Science Education area of Bishop Museum.  This includes:

            - Ensuring that grant deliverables are produced as required by a given grant

            - Supervising the grant’s budget

            - Producing required grant reports

       - Coordinate grant project evaluation

  1. §         Take lead on supervision of such science education areas as Science on a Sphere and the programs in Science Adventure Center. 
  2. §         Serve as Museum’s point person for Science on a Sphere (SOS) in terms of content and program development; become fluent in basic technical operation of SOS.
  3. §         Take the lead on developing science programs for school visitors and general public and in refining existing programs.
  4. §         Take lead on quality control for delivery of science education programs for school visitors, general visitors and outreach.  This includes managing the evaluation of science education programs; setting up training and approval system for staff and volunteers who deliver science education programs; and working consistently and steadily to upgrade programs.
  5. §         Manage science education docent program, who delivers educational programming in such areas as the Science Adventure Center and Science on a Sphere.  This includes managing the recruitment, training, evaluation and quality control of the science education docent program.
  6. §         Function as project manager as assigned by supervisor.
  7. §         Present science education programs at the Bishop Museum for school groups and general public.
  8. §         Present “outreach” programs on a wide range of science topics from geology to astronomy.  
  9. §         Writing curriculum (lesson plans) for offsite and onsite science programs.
  10. §         Assisting the rest of the science team in developing and presenting teacher workshops on a variety of science topics. 
  11. §         Promoting Bishop Museum programs through attendance at teacher events, open houses, and media appearances.
  12. §         Participating in other program working groups as needed.
  13. §         Assisting with the development of science exhibits.  
  14. §         Interacting with staff, museum clients, contractors, and others with tact, courtesy, and unqualified respect at all times.  Stay motivated and project a positive and professional attitude toward fellow workers and clients.
  15. §          Working in a safe manner so as not to endanger fellow staff members, volunteers and visitors.  Comply with safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices.  Reading all safety materials received.  Reporting unsafe conditions and unsafe acts directly to supervisor.  Promptly reporting accidents to immediate supervisor.  Maintaining assigned work area and equipment freed of accident producing conditions.
  16. §         Performing other duties as required to accomplish Museum goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  1. §         MA or MS in Education, Science or other applicable field

Skills

  1. §      Demonstrated management skills
  2. §      High level of organizational skills
  3. §      Experience in writing, obtaining and managing grants (federal, state, local)
  4. §      Experience in informal science education settings such as museums
  5. §      Formal (classroom) education experience highly desirable
  6. §      Strong general science background
  7. §      Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  8. §      Ability to work effectively in a team context
  9. §      Ability to work under time constraints to complete tasks by required dates
