Education Volunteer Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the general management of the on-floor volunteer program including, recruitment, training and maintenance of the volunteer cadre. This includes, but not limited to, docents for Hawaiian Hall, the Science Discovery Center and special events volunteers. Collaborates with the Culture Education manager, Science Education Manager, and the Education Operations Manager in assessing programmatic needs, and coordinating content training. Works closely with Human Resources staff to ensure that education volunteer program is administrated according to general Museum policies.
MAJOR DUTIES OR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Note: this is a full time, Tuesday through Saturday position. The position does involve working Saturdays on a weekly basis. The position also entails occasional work on Sundays and Mondays and evenings, as the job demands.
- 1. Develop and implement a recruitment plan for Education volunteers in coordination with HR department and other Education supervisors. This includes Hawaiian Hall volunteers; volunteers for the Museum’s Science Adventure Center, a hands-on science education center on the Museum campus; and for special temporary exhibits ranging from Dinosaurs to Circus.
- 2. Develop and implement orientation programs for the Education volunteers. This includes coordinating training sessions to ensure that all new public-contact volunteers have a thorough orientation to the history, programming, and operations of Bishop Museum as well as content areas.
- 3. Develop and implement content trainings in conjuction with the Education Department managers (in Operations, Science and Culture) ; this includes working with the area Managers to coordinate speakers; arranging workshop venues; implementing other volunteer enrichment events as scheduled with speakers and other educational opportunities.
- 4. Establishes rubrics for volunteer assessment in coordination with the Education Department managers , director, keeping in mind the requirements of the Museum’s Human Resources policy on volunteers. Serves as point person for quality control for the education volunteer program; perform assessments for programs delivered by volunteers and perform annual evaluation for each volunteer in the program.
- 5. Coordinate and establish recruitment, training and maintenance of the Hawaiian Hall docent program- NāKukui ā Pauahi with the Culture Education Manager to continue to “grow” the new program developed for the newly-reopened Hawaiian Hall.
- 6. Work closely with the Science Education Manager to develop a new docent program for the Museum’s Science Adventure Center. Duties include recruitment and coordination of training.
- 7. Work closely with the Education Operations Manager to recruit and train special exhibit guide volunteers for such temporary exhibits as Dinosaurs and Circus.
- 8. Participate in setting goals and developing budgets for Education program. And for the Museum volunteer program as a whole.
- 9. May assist in the preparation of appropriate education grant proposals.
- 10. Perform other duties as required to meet Museum goals.
- 11. Interact with staff, museum clients, contractors, and others with tact, courtesy, and unqualified respect at all times. Stay motivated and project a positive and professional attitude toward fellow workers and clients.
- 12. Work in a safe manner so as not to endanger fellow staff members, volunteers, and visitors. Comply with safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices. Read all safety materials received. Report unsafe conditions and unsafe acts directly to supervisor. Promptly report accidents to immediate supervisor. Maintain assigned work area and equipment freed of accident producing conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
- Must have at least three years’ experience in managing a volunteer program
- Knowledge of volunteer programs is essential.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, specifially managing multiple projects and priorities
- Knowledge of informal education program development.
- Public speaking experience, teaching experience, performance experience highly desired. * Must be dependable and able to work flexible hours including occasional weekend and evening work.
- Good oral communication skills with staff and with public.
- Experience in seeking, writing, and managing grants is desirable.
