JOB DESCRIPTION – Essential Job Responsibilities:
Part-time position (20 hours/week).
Cultural Educator position, with an emphasis on support of cultural education through Ola Nä Mo’olelo (storytelling performance), school and daily programs. Position also coordinates culture outreach (Ola Nä Mo’olelo) program’s reservations and scheduling and develops and presents high quality education culture programs for onsite and offsite museum visitors.
MAJOR DUTIES OR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Note: this is a part time position. The position does involve working Saturdays on a weekly basis. There are also occasional evening and Sunday presentations as well.
- 1. Present Hawaiian/Polynesian cultural programs at the Bishop Museum for school groups and general public. Programs include dramatic storytelling (Ola Nä Mo‘olelo), tours of Museum exhibit halls, and other educational programs for school visitors and general public.
- 2. Primary reservations person for Bishop Museum’s Culture Education Outreach program (Ola Nä Mo’olelo). Take calls from teachers; explain the range of programs and prices. Book the reservations for culture programs. Schedule staff for these programs. Serve as the liaison between school and museum. Assist accounting with preparing the contract and invoicing the schools, coordinates with Administration Assistant when programs and presenters are traveling to the outer islands.
- 3. Present cultural outreach programs on O‘ahu and on the neighbor islands. Programs include dramatic storytelling and interpretation of artifacts and replicas of artifacts from the Museum’s collection. Venues include schools, conferences, and special events.
- 4. Assist the Culture Education Manager of the Education Department in helping ensure that the department’s culture programs are functioning well.
- 5. Work with Culture Education Manager and with development teams consisting of education, exhibits, and research staff in the planning, implementation and evaluation of educational/cultural programs for Hawaiian Hall for a variety of audiences and which serves the needs of the community.
- 6. Participate in providing cultural training programs for other museum staff.
- 7. On a need basis, develop written cultural programs, materials, and hands-on demonstrations for better interpretation of exhibits and education activities. Tasks in this area include writing exhibit label copy and brochure text.
- 8. Assist with special projects on cultural topics (storytelling festival, lecture series etc.)
- 9. Represent the Museum in Hawaiian organizations within the community.
- 10. Work with staff in museum collections and archives in selecting and properly handling the museum artifacts used for educational programming.
- 11. Perform other duties as required to meet Museum goals.
- 12. Interact with staff, museum clients, contractors, and others with tact, courtesy, and unqualified respect at all times. Stay motivated and project a positive and professional attitude toward fellow workers and clients.
- 13. Work in a safe manner so as not to endanger fellow staff members, volunteers, and visitors. Comply with safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices. Read all safety materials received. Report unsafe conditions and unsafe acts directly to supervisor. Promptly report accidents to immediate supervisor. Maintain assigned work area and equipment freed of accident producing conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- § Knowledge
- · Three years experience in programming and/or education.
- · Strong background in Hawaiian culture required. Proficiency in Hawaiian Language is essential.
- · Experience in public presentations and performances is also essential; this position is in large part a delivery position, with dramatic storytelling, public tours and school group programs among the primary duties of the position. Experience in chanting, performing hula and ‘ukulele desired

Machines and Equipment Used: computer (desktop and laptop), video projector, digital and video camera, microphone, portable sound system, CD player, DVD, telephone fax machine, laminating machine. Proficient in Word, Excel, and other word processing programs.
