Scientific Name: Rattus rattus
Also Known As:
Roof Rat, House Rat, Black Rat, Ship Rat
How It Came To Hawai‘i :
The Roof Rat came on board European sailing ships probably around 1870.
Impact Since Its Arrival:
Rats are pests in sugar cane and other crops. They have invaded native forests where they eat native land snails and raid bird nests. They cause serious harm to seabirds at nesting colonies. Rats carry fleas that spread human diseases such as bubonic plague and typhus.
