Biological Control

Sometimes alien animals are brought in on purpose to help get rid of pests. However, we can't predict what might happen when we do this. Mongooses were brought to Hawai‘i to control rats in cane fields. Was this a good idea?
The Myth:
It is commonly believed that mongooses failed to control rats because rats are active mainly at night when mongooses are sleeping.

The Truth:
Although they do normally sleep at night, mongooses were very successful in controlling rats in cane fields, especially the ground-nesting Polynesian and Norway Rats.

The Problem:
Mongooses don't stay where we want them. They eat whatever is available. They are efficient at hunting on the ground but Roof Rats often nest in trees.
