What Pigs Can Do

Polynesian settlers kept their pigs within village compounds. It was offspring of the pigs first introduced by Cook that escaped into the wild. Wild pigs are now found in many forest areas and are a danger to native plants and animals there.

Pigs wallow in ground that has been disturbed by rooting. The wallows become a breeding ground for insects that are carriers of disease.

What we can do. Fencing is one method of controlling the damage done by this alien beast. Recreational hunting of problem animals (pigs, goats and deer) is another method used to manage these pest populations in some places.

Pig tracks are evidence of an alien invasion. Pigs root up the soil in search of food. By devouring and trampling plants, they destroy native habitats. They contribute to the spread of weedy plants, carrying seeds to new locations as they forage for food.
