Scientific Name: Sus scrofa scrofa
How It Came To Hawai‘i :
Though the first settlers arrived here with Polynesian pigs, it was the introduction of European pigs that caused harm to native habitats. Captain Cook brought the first pair of these pigs to Hawai‘i in 1778.
Impact Since Its Arrival:
Wild pigs are native plant killers and destroy forest habitats. And they create nesting grounds for carriers of bird diseases.
