Aliens to Hawaiian Streams

Much of the water life in Hawaiian streams are alien. The aliens in the above aquarium are commonly found in places such as Manoa Stream.

Tilapia
Introduced in 1951 as bait and aquatic weed control, major reason for decline of Hawaiian waterbirds.

Armored Catfish
From South America, a released pet fish, eats algae, may have developed a taste for native 'o'opu eggs.

Western Mosquitofish
A deadly introduction, brought here to control mosquitoes in 1905, caused the decline of native fishes and native damselflies in low, wet areas of O‘ahu.

Guppy
Introduced in 1922 to control mosquitoes, harmful to native stream fish and insects.

Shortfin Molly
Present here before 1950, released aquarium pet. largest of the introduced live-bearing fish, carries several parasites that harm 'o'opu.

Atyid Shrimp
On O‘ahu since 1991, released aquarium pet.

Crayfish
Introduced as a potential food resource, seriously damages walls of taro patches, the cause for the poisoning of 3,500 acres of land taro between 1940-1952.

Tahitian Prawn
Native of Tahiti and Guam, thought to have harmed many native stream animals, can cause serious illness if eaten raw.
