Featured Alien: Emperor Scorpion

Scientific Name: Pandinus imperator

How It Came To Hawai‘i :

It hasn't come to Hawai‘i yet! However, a similar scorpion has been found among goods shipped from the southwest Pacific and Orient.

Impact Since Its Arrival:

The Emperor scorpion's sting is not as deadly as others, but it can cause a nasty wound. Its affect on species in our native rain forests is more likely to be harmful than beneficial. We want to keep this alien out of Hawai‘i !

This is the largest scorpion in the world, reaching 4.5 to 6 inches in length. Its coloring varies from dark green to earth brown and is a perfect camouflage for the forests of West Africa where it lives. Equipped with large, strong claws, the Emperor scorpion could be a fearsome predator, though not much is known about its habits.
