Three Kinds of Eleutherodactylus in Hawai‘i |

Three species of Eleutherodactylus now live in the Islands. All of them lay their eggs in loose soil and leaf litter. Eggs hatch in 2-3 weeks and froglets emerge. Since there is no tadpole stage for this frog, it is easily transported in potted plants.
Eleutherodactylus coqui
- From Puerto Rico.
- Found on Maui and the island of Hawai‘i .
- Grows up to 2 inches in length.
Eleutherodactylus martinicensis
- From the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean.
- Found on Maui.
- Similar to the Coqui in size.
Eleutherodactylus planirostris
- From Cuba, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands.
- Now found on O‘ahu and the island of Hawai‘i .
- Grows to 1.5 inches.
