For hundreds of years, Hawaiians lived in isolation and free from contact with diseases that ravaged populations elsewhere. In isolation, their bodies did not develop natural defenses against diseases such as typhoid fever. When this and other alien diseases arrived here, Hawaiians were defenseless and hundreds of thousands died. Alien diseases were the main reason for the devastation of the Hawaiian population during the 122 years following Cook's arrival.
