Wanted or Unwanted: Who decides?

Hawai‘i State officials are important guardians of our local environment. Legislators review bills and develop laws to control animal introductions here. Special agencies, such as the State Department of Agriculture, produce guidelines and regulations on plants and animals that can be imported to Hawai‘i .

Forbidden in Hawai‘i are animals that threaten the island environment, local agriculture or human safety.

Three different lists of animals and microorganisms have been developed:

  • Conditionally Approved
  • Restricted
  • Prohibited

If an animal or microorganism is not on any of these lists, then it is considered prohibited.
