Not all pets stay pets. Some escape their cages or are released, then multiply in the wild and become big problems.
Park rangers first saw rabbits in Haleakala National Park (Maui) in October 1989. As sightings became frequent, rangers found rabbits were destroying the native vegetation. They devoured the leaves and bark of mämane trees and seriously damaged 'ohelo shrubs on which native nene geese feed. By 1991 officials had removed 100 rabbits from the Park. All were descendants of six released pets. The cost of stopping this alien invasion: $56,000.
