Featured Alien: Red-vented Bulbul

Scientific Name: Pycnotus cafer

How It Came To Hawai‘i :

The Red-vented Bulbul is from regions in south and southeast Asia. The first bulbuls appeared in Hawai‘i in the mid-1950s and were probably escaped cage birds brought here as pets.

Impact Since Its Arrival:

The Red-vented Bulbul has become one of the more common birds on O‘ahu. Stray birds have been reported on Kaua'i, Hawai‘i , Moloka'i and Kaho'olawe. It feeds on fruit, insects, and sometimes lizards. It is aggressive and has become a serious agricultural pest.
