Polynesians began the process of man-made change in Hawai‘i . They cleared land to grow taro, banana, sweet potato and other alien plants. The need for clothing, shelter and transportation affected native resources. Birds provided feathers for cloaks and capes; homes were constructed from plant materials, and sturdy forest trees were cut to build canoes. Even the animals introduced by Polynesians (such as pigs, chickens, dogs) had an effect; they often fed on native plants and animals. |
