The first plants and animals that came to Hawai‘i on their own adapted to their new environment in ways that made them unique. They are the 'natives' of our islands.
The new plants and animals brought by people later are 'aliens.'
Many were stronger and more aggressive than the natives ones. Because native plants and animals had little defense against aliens, many natives are now endangered or extinct. Aliens are a big reason why Hawai‘i has the highest rate of endangered species in the country. |
