Royal Order of Kapi`olani

(13k)

King Kamehameha V and King Kalakaua adopted the European and Asian custom of awarding medals in recognition of service. Five royal orders were established, each with its own insignia, each with several different honorary levels. Only the reigning monarch could bestow these decorations. More than 800 awards were made.

Royal Order of Kapi`olani (8 classes). Established 1880 by King Kalakaua to honor Queen Kapi`olani and her namesake, Kapi`olani The Great.
