Butterflies

(52k) (28k)

The Bishop Museum has a collection of insects of more than 14 million specimens.

There's an incredible variety of butterflies and moths in the world, with many different shapes, colors and patterns. You're seeing just a few here. How do you tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth? The tips of a butterfly's antenna are shaped like a club while the tips of the moth's antenna are feathery or pointed. Color doesn't really tell the difference. While moths are usually less colorful than butterflies, moths that are active during daylight often have bright colors. In this display of butterflies from around the world, only two are native to Hawai‘i . Can you tell which ones?
