Mantle Rock from Salt Lake

(39k)

Mantle Rock from Salt Lake

Earth's mantle, an olivine-rich rock, starts about 3-4 miles (5-6km) below the ocean floor and goes down 1,800 miles (2860km). It's actually 80% of the Earth's volume. Lava is melted mantle rock. It flows from the Earth, as you see in Hawai‘i , but heavy mantle rock, our sample, usually doesn't erupt.

Lherzolite found at Salt Lake Crater, O`ahu.
