The Vision of Hawai`iloa

Building Our Culture
"The culture needs to be kept alive by being practiced...in building the canoe, we are building our culture."
(Nainoa Thompson, NHCAP Explorations Project Director)

Hawai`iloa, legendary hero voyager, set sail from central Polynesia more than 1,600 years ago and discovered Hawai‘i . The daring spirit, far-reaching vision, and well-honed skills of Hawai`iloa the hero inspired the Hawai`iloa Project.

Hawai`iloa builds upon the phenomenal successes of the Hokule`a voyages -- themselves feats of engineering, navigation, and courage. The builders of Hokule`a strove to prove the seafaring abilities of their ancestors; the mission of Hawai`iloa is education and perpetuation of traditional Hawaiian culture. Hawai`iloa has become a reality through partnerships with artists, educators, historians, scientists, sportsmen and hundreds of volunteers.
