Making Ready
Ho`omakaukau

Man Overboard!

Hopefully this shout will never be raised. Makaukau (preparation) and palekana (safety) are foremost as Hawai`iloa prepares for the more than 30-day voyage to the South Pacific. Each crew member must be ikaika (physically fit) and mentally makaukau (prepared). Throughout the voyage, the crew will strive to maintain pono (goodness, balance). The crew trained during the sea trails, so all know the feel and sounds of Hawai`iloa intimately.

In the final days, Hawai`iloa is outfitted with the untraditional (but necessary) safety harnesses, fire extinguishers, life jackets, and flares. But the safety will continue at sea. By the time she reaches Raiatea, Hawai`iloa and her crew will have undergone more than 120 safety checks, one every four hours.

Ua naha na moku.
Broken away are the islands.
Said when the islands are out of sight.
