Mechanical Muscle!

Moving 50 tons of wood from dockside to Bishop Museum required the help of non-traditional experts, those familiar with heavy loads. Cranes and forklifts moved the massive load of trees to a specially built hale wa`a (canoe house) at Bishop Museum. In the old days, this job took human muscle, sweat, and massive hand-made kaula (ropes).

Under the giant A-frame hale, local craftsmen and a massive volunteer team worked with giant jigs and table saws, shaping the ka`ele (hulls) that one day would one be Hawai`iloa.
