X-Stream Bio Detectives
Grades 4-8
Length of program: 60 minutes

Act as a Hawai'i biologist to conduct a survey of a stream habitat to determine the potential impact of a construction project on the stream. Investigate, identify and research specimens (fish, mollusks, crustaceans and insects) using microscopes, a dichotomous key, a specimen reference collection, and field guides. Discover native and introduced species.

SC.7.3.3 Explain how biotic and abiotic factors affect the carrying capacity and sustainability of an ecosystem.
SC.8.5.1 Describe how changes in the physical in the physical environment affect the survival of organisms.

Program Requirements
Set-up time: 90 minutes
Session Duration: 60 minutes
Time Between Sessions: 15 minutes
Breakdown Time: 45 minutes

Hours: During the school day
Location: Classroom or multi-purpose room (program to be set up and remain in same room)

SCHOOL MUST PROVIDE:
            - Set up 30 chairs “theater style” facing front
            - Set up 6 large tables (able to hold 2 microscope stations each)

NOTE: Cannot be booked on same day as Stream Ecology.
