Rockin' Pohaku
Grades 4-8
Length of program: 60 minutes

Students will study Hawaiian pohaku (stone) tools and the physical properties of the rocks used to make them. They will handle a variety of different cultural objects, such as poi pounders, scrapers, ulumaika, mortar and pestle, and more. Students will examine various Hawaiian rock specimens and will be encouraged to think about why different rocks were used for specific types of tools. They will use stone tools in the same ways that ancient Hawaiians used them; some for fun, some for survival.
