Bibliography of Hawaiian Vascular Plant Literature (version 1.1)
compiled by Bishop Museum, Herbarium Pacificum (BISH) staff and volunteers

	This database contains 4,225 bibliographic records for literature on the native and naturalized Hawaiian flowering plants and ferns, especially journal articles and books concerned with the taxonomy, systematics, and ecology of these taxa. Cultivated and nonvascular plants are not included. The current version was updated December, 1998. 
	The bibliography was initially compiled by Susan W. Mill in conjunction with the production of the "Indexed Bibliography on the Flowering Plants of HawaiŒi" (Mill et al. 1988) These 3,257 records use a controlled set of keywords (for a list see Mill et al. 1988, pp. 7-10) and included items published through 1986. Additional references compiled after that date by BISH staff and volunteers have been added, more or less annually, from 1993 to the present. A working bibliography of Hawaiian fern references compiled by Jane Medler on file cards was also incorporated into the bibliography, thereby broadening its scope to include all native and naturalized Hawaiian vascular plants. These later additions tend to include full abstracts, where available, rather than keywords. 
	Because this is a composite database, there are internal variations in format of entries. The following points should be borne in mind when searching it:
1. Island names may be spelled with diacritics or without (e.g., Kaua‘i or KauaŒi). 
2. Family names are not included when a reference includes many families.
3. Species names may or may not be included for a reference.
4. Taxonomic names vary depending on the time of publication and the taxonomic concepts followed by the author of a reference.
