Mike Chinaka
Mike Chinaka was appointed as Vice President, Treasurer and CFO of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum on September 20, 2001 , and was promoted to Senior Vice President in September 2005. During his tenure, Mike has been responsible for all aspects of the Museum’s administrative functions, including finance, accounting, budgeting, investments, information technology, human resources, building and grounds, and registration. Mr. Chinaka is part of the Senior Management team, which directs the Museum on implementing its strategic and operational plans. He reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Museum. Mr. Chinaka was the project leader for planning and constructing the Science Adventure Center , the Museum’s newest gallery addition to the Kalihi Campus.
Mr. Chinaka was named Interim President of Bishop Museum upon the departure of William Brown in mid-January 2007. Chinaka will serve in this capacity while an International Search for President is conducted.
Prior to his Museum appointment, Mr. Chinaka was Chief Operations Officer of the Asia/Pacific Region of The Nature Conservancy. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the region’s finance, accounting, budgeting and information technology. During his career, Mike has also had experience in commercial property acquisitions, sales and management, in banking, and as an external auditor for a national CPA firm.
Mr. Chinaka was born and raised in Honolulu , Hawaii , in 1952, and graduated from Kalani High School , and the University of Hawaii – Manoa (B.B.A. in Accounting, 1974, and M.B.A. 1977). He obtained his permit to practice as a Certified Public Accountant in November 1977. Mr. Chinaka is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Hawaii Society of Certified Public Accountants, and Honolulu Bible Church .
Mr. Chinaka is married to Amy M. Chinaka and has four children – Robyn, Daniel, Christie, and Jason Chinaka.
